Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Competitors are granted the option to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
