The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, following through on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s process for letting employees go.

Although the official did not specify which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed bill to reopen the government unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be ended soon.

During a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

These terminations occurred on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of the previous month but not the beginning of October, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government running,” the advocate stated. “Our air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
