What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 individuals perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll is 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
