Vince Gilligan Shares He Has an Idea of How The Apple TV+ Show Might Finish... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit sci-fi show coming to an end—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the fan response and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. He is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's by design. Never in my life looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. Not because I don't care. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan See the Finale of Pluribus?
So if the writers aren't taking cues by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… sort of.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” he states. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Then again, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why not reference the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
