Two Cuba-Destined Humanitarian Sailboats Reported Lost after Departing the Coast of Mexico.
A large-scale search and rescue mission is currently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of unlocated boats loaded with humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.
Military Search and Rescue Missions Deployed
Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval assets and military search aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting no fewer than nine sailors, according to a military release.
The ships had been projected to make landfall in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their docking, authorities reported.
Context of Aid to the Island
The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country endures repeated national electricity failures.
"Both captains and crews are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are outfitted with suitable safety systems and communication devices," a spokesperson associated with the mission stated.
The nine-person crew are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their consular staff.
"We are working closely with the authorities and remain confident in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.
Earlier Aid Mission
Earlier in the week, the government in Havana warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had transported 14 tons of donated goods to the nation.
That vessel, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" after the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to begin the revolution in the mid-20th century, brought solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, cycles and provisions.
Larger Geopolitical Context
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led initiatives to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation began.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" lack of essential goods, with over 50k surgical procedures postponed in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with remarks from various officials underscoring the delicate nature of relations.
Reacting to certain comments, a senior official from Cuba insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Indications suggest that early stages of discussions commenced, although their present status remains uncertain.
The naval forces affirmed it was committed to using every available asset at its command to find the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the sailors.
To date, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
