The Latest Casual Game Mode Ignites Intense Discussions Over AI Players, Experience Points, and Queue Times

Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios introduced a fresh playlist titled Casual Breakthrough. In essence, this mode resembles the standard Breakthrough format but features several notable adjustments:

  • Every squad has just eight human participants, with the remaining filled by 32 bots.
  • Activities performed by human gamers grant full XP, while AI activities provide reduced XP.
  • Only two maps can be played: Siege of Cairo and Empire State map.
  • Elements like Dogtags, achievements, and stat tracking are disabled.

So essentially, this mode delivers on its title: it's a laid-back take of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume there's nothing wrong, as it provides additional choices for gamers seeking alternative ways to have fun with the game. But, gaming history has shown one thing, it is that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, many Battlefield 6 players are upset.

Player Responses: Anger to Support

"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the mistakes of your competitors," reads one reply to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking concept," says a different user. At the same time, in community forums, one user remarks, "It's unclear where we are going with this game," and someone else details all the issues they believe to be problematic in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, fix drone glitch, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We don't need this AI-heavy playlist."

However, amid the criticism, there are players explaining how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's very fun to practice, human participants prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," says a forum post. "The community fails to see that there are gamers who actually go outside and can't play this game 24/7. Let them strike a balance," adds another. A response on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is great for me," and another applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."

Valid Concerns and Player Input

Despite the support, there are constructive reasons to criticize the new mode. A few folks have highlighted that it will make queue times more extended for other modes due to the sheer number of options in the game already. Similarly, some areas often face AI-filled matches in the existing playlists. Additionally, it appears somewhat counterintuitive that the mode won't start without a minimum number of human gamers, even though it focuses mostly on combat against bots.

Finally, one of the biggest complaints is that Battlefield Portal was promised to provide complete rewards, even against bots, but that got canned when they tried to remove XP farming from the system. So Casual Breakthrough feels like the player base compromising halfway, as per a Reddit comment. A different user describes this addition as the developers "making a mistake significantly, I experienced so much fun in the initial release, what prompted them to change it?"

Future Prospects: Will Changes Occur?

If the development team has demonstrated something to date with the latest installment, it's that they're paying attention and responding to feedback. Tasks being too difficult got fixed very quickly, as did the specific battle pass objectives. It is likely that, should analytics shows this new playlist is underperforming to their standards, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
