That Gory Animated Movie Ending That Stays With Audiences
Among all the mature animated films I have personally viewed, no other has lingered in my mind as much as the fear-filled finale of a graphically gory and highly provocative 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, the Spain-based filmmaker created a dark, somber , frequently brutal world with a few small , desolate glimmers of hope.
Although The Unicorn Wars seems like it came from a drive to push the medium even more, the director stated that it was more an effort to communicate a global, multicultural message about “the mutual source of all wars.”
That idea is communicated through a band of vividly colored bears , openly based on a popular line of lovable figures.
Maturing in a culture focused on warmongering as well as the defense industry, many of the bears are obsessed with exterminating unicorns, due to a religious scripture that tells them they were once rulers of the forest, before the horned beings drove them out.
A few did not entirely bought into the indoctrination, and choose to sample narcotics and fornicate outdoors.
In contrast to their cuddly equivalents, these bright beings display genitals and clear sex drives.
For a certain particularly cruel, cynical bear, the character Bluey, the conflict with the unicorns turns into a path toward dominance — and specifically to dominance over his softer, more compassionate sibling the bear Tubby.
Bluey is a bully , an obvious sociopath , and when fear overcomes his unit and takes his teammates one by one, he grabs increasingly influence personally, through ever more gory, harmful methods.
Meanwhile, the horned creatures are suffering their own terror, in the form of an expanding, deadly beast in their habitat.
“Initially, it seems like a humorous movie,” the filmmaker commented. “However it becomes a more intense and sorrowful movie. And in the finale, it’s a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars starts out resembling one of the more whimsical films by a renowned animator, which find a wicked pleasure in allowing animated figures swear, engage in violence, or have intimate relations.
Then it evolves into closer to a more grim work by that same creator, including ever more explicit brutality , a palpable connection to the actual suffering of war.
In the finale, it is a full-on theatrical horror bloodbath.
The horror which makes this a perfect Halloween movie kicks in much sooner than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is one for the hardcore gorehounds, for enthusiasts of intense movies who desire to watch a film they haven’t ever seen on-screen before, and can endure a story which delivers no restraint.
View it in a dark room with no disturbances, and the conclusion will burrow into your mind and stay with you.
