Senegal's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
As I enter the space, Lamine Camara picks up a football he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. It’s a simple symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken directly to the academy. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and Continental Breakthrough
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and being named best player.
A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family support to keep him focused.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.
Life at Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals
At Monaco, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. He is frequently ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the game.
