A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country grappling with persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on a Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old media personality was approached by three individuals, with one opened fire on him before fleeing on foot.

Law enforcement said that Stock was targeted as he was departing from a location in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

The DJ sought to escape after he was shot but collapsed on the opposite side of the road.

Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and nothing was taken during the assault.

Officials are asking members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to contact them.

"Our information indicates they traveled on foot after the shooting, and officers have been tracking them to find their whereabouts," added an official.
