Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
