The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
