RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts down to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.
British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members on duty over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."
Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
