A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
